found a little bait site
« on: August 25, 2019, 08:10:01 PM »
Apparently someone didn't get the memo that this is a no-no.

A bundt cake pan chained to a bush. Just about empty, but looked and smelled like they'd filled it full of melted Jolly Ranchers.
Funny thing is, it was right on a giant berry patch that was getting hammered by a bear (or Biggy) while I was taking these pictures. Too thick to see anything.

I found a bait site in Capitol State Forest one year when I was scouting. I took pictures and marked the location then turned the info over to WDFW. Plus there is a reward program if your tip leads to prosecution.

Was there a camera on it? Possibly just a lure for pictures and not a “bait sight”.

Didn't see one, and not any trees to mount one on, but there may have been.

So are you now obligated to not hunt near this site? If so that's really crappy.

I'm not going to sweat it. A few Jolly Ranchers next to a 3 acre berry patch is going to be a hard sell for baiting.

bear bating vigilantes

I do think the vigilante sawed the bait site to make it out of compliance as the hound hunter said, why would the bear hunters go through all the trouble to saw the stump only to not have it in compliance?  Doesn't make since.  They use the bait sites to get fresh bear tracks for the dogs to chase.

If that's a bear bait its the most screwed up version of a bait for bears I have ever seen??? A bear would have whatever was in it cleaned up in 1/2 second and be on his way.  :dunno: Bear baiting even close to a berry patch has normally been useless also. I have no idea what that is but IF they are trying to bait bears that is a pointless effort in my opinion

I think his agenda came out at the end "get the bear hunters kicked off our national forest"

Guys melt a bunch of jolly ranchers in a pan so it becomes one large hard candy. The bears have to lick it out and it take a lot of time.

That's what it looked like. There was also a steel ring which I assume was cast into the Jolly rancher donut.

And it's extremely clean.  It would  be a good thing to try in Idaho.
